Donation Campaign|August 1 Water Day

Please support the JWF Fund of the Japan Water Forum with a donation.

The Hot Season Is Here!

Let’s remember the importance of water and the need to protect our precious water resources.

Japan Water Forum’s Activities

Even during this hot season, the Japan Water Forum is committed to addressing water-related challenges.

We are currently in the process of reviewing project proposals submitted for our original grant program, JWF Fund 2026.

August 1 – Water Day Campaign

Please support the JWF Fund with a donation between July 15 and August 31.

The Japan Water Forum’s grant program, the JWF Fund, invites grassroots organizations working in developing countries around the world to submit projects that address water problems. Every year in early summer, selected projects receive support of up to US$1,500 per project.

For the JWF Fund 2026, we received 224 applications from June 1 to 30. Following a careful review process, five projects will be selected for support.

In this campaign, our goal is to fund at least two projects, and ideally three, through your generous donations. All donated funds will be used entirely to support local activities in developing countries.

We sincerely ask for your support.

What We Learned from JWF Fund 2025

A Case Study of the Participation and Education, Promotion of Hygiene, Sanitation and Water Supply (PEC-Zonal) in Irane Community(Mozambique)

Last year, JWF Fund 2025 received 246 applications from 41 countries.  Five projects from four countries were selected for support. Here, we describe a case study in the community of Irane in Mozambique.

Water Problems in the Project Area

The community of Irane, located in Namacurra District, Zambézia Province in northeastern Mozambique, is home to 337 households with a total population of 1,512. The community faced serious Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) challenges. Households and the local primary school lacked access to safe water and adequate sanitation facilities. Their only water source was an open surface water source, which was highly vulnerable to contamination.

Before the project, the water source shown in the photo was not considered safe.

Proposal by the Local Organization and Project Activities

Associação Wakelana is a non-profit organization established in 2021 and based in Namacurra District. Witnessing the hardships faced by the local community, the organization developed the Participation and Education, Promotion of Hygiene, Sanitation and Water Supply (PEC-Zonal) initiative, and submitted it for the JWF Fund 2025. The proposal was selected to receive support from JWF Fund 2025. As the project’s first step, a well was dug and hand pump installed at the center of the community. Following this, sanitation facilities were established, including 27 latrines, 49 dish racks, and 27 refuse pits. The project also conducted community hygiene awareness meetings, household visits, a school WASH program, and technical skills training for local technicians.

Voices from the Community (48-year-old woman)

We are extremely happy and deeply grateful for the installation of this new well. For many years, we women had struggled to find safe drinking water. Having a well in our community is a great blessing for our families, our children, and the teachers at the local school, as it will greatly reduce the burden of collecting water. We sincerely thank Associação Wakelana and all the supporters in Japan for their generous support.

What We Learned

With a US$1,500 grant, we installed one hand pump well and addressed the community’s water problems. Through this project, we learned that access to clean water is the foundation for improving hygiene and sanitation conditions.
