6) Problems
Water resources are limited in the Northern provinces of Sri Lanka. People have to get drinking water from well or buying in town. Fetching water is daily burden for women and the cost of buying water is stressing household economy. In recent years, due to the pollution by residual agricultural chemical in a soil, changes of well-water quality (taste and appearance) are identified. It has been pointed out that continuation of drinking well-water will lead to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).

7) Output
・Rainwater harvesting tanks (8,000 liters size in each) were installed in 14 households.
・Operation and maintenance training was conducted to beneficiaries.

8) Impact
・Each household (4 to 5 family members per a household) can secure and use 10 liters of rainwater per a person for the purposes of living including drinking during dry season.
・Women are released from daily burdens of fetching water.
・The cost for purchasing water can be reduced.
・Instead of using well-water, using rainwater will prevent beneficiaries from onset and progress of kidney diseases.

Message from beneficiary

4℃_7
I used to walk 2 km to go to the shop and purchase filtered water. Our daily requirement of water is about 10 liters, and 1 liter costs LKR 30. I therefore use to spend LKR 300 per a day for purchasing water. Now, money is saved and I can spend money to other activities. Using the time saved, I can cultivate my paddy field. Now I have no worries in mind thinking of scarcity of water for household activities. I drink rain water and bless for my health and house.

JWF continues to try solving water – related problems through grass-roots activities collaborated with our support members.
