Mission Uchimizu 2010 Report on the ECO Study Tour “Tracing the Journey of Water”

<Day 1>
Where does our tap water come from? Let’s visit the beginning of the Water’s Journey!

Date | Monday, 16th August 2010 |
Venue | Ogouchi Dam (Nishiokutama-gun, Tokyo) |
| Activities | Participants visited the Ogouchi Dam, which was completed in 1957 as a reservoir for water supply in Tokyo. We learned the structure and function of the dam and the role of the watershed forest. |

<Day 2>
What kinds of creatures can we find in a river? Let’s explore the riverfront!

Venue | Tama River (Kinutahonmura, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo) |
| Activities | Participants learned the roles of reeds and mosses in the river which clean the water, and the ecosystem of river creatures. |

How the water is used for agriculture? Let’s experience planting and harvesting!

Venue | ECA’s Farm (Nagareyama-shi, Chiba Prefecture) |
| Activities | Participants learned the relationship between water and agriculture through planting and harvesting at the farm of ECA, a company promoting organic vegetables by natural farming. |

<Day 4>
What happens to the used water? Let’s learn how to recycle water!

Venue | Ochiai Water Reclamation Center (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) |
| Activities | Participants learned the water purification process by actually observing the purification system. Treated water is brought back to rivers or used in the office buildings in Shinju-ku. |

| Lecture on the water reclamation by a former director of the center. | Comparing the clarity of treated water at treatment stages. |

| Making wooden bucket of forest thinnings. | Mission Uchimizu using recycled water. The air temperature went down from 34.0℃ to 31.9℃. |

Let’s study how to save water. And Let’s Uchimizu with recycled water!

Venue | Minato City ECO-PLAZA / Roppongi Hills (Minato-ku, Tokyo) |
| Activities | The Director of Mission Uchimizu Headquarters gave a lecture titled “Water is Life” with lots of interesting topics such as the mystery of the Mona Lisa, the secret of the Japanese Long Life and the fact that Japanese people are using lots of foreign water. Also, participants learned the importance of water through the Water Saving Quiz.
Later we joined the Mission Uchimizu in Roppongi and the air temperature went down from 30.8℃ to 30.1℃.
