Darvish Yu Water Fund

Background:

Mr. Yu Darvish is a talented professional baseball pitcher who was among the first Japanese athletes to turn his attention to global water issues and has made great strides to bring safe, clean water to needy people around the world.

In his youth, Darvish witnessed the devastation wrought by a drought in Iran, from where his father hails, and he recalls that he was determined to help these people when he became older.

In 2007, two years after his Japanese pro baseball debut, Darvish established the "Darvish Yu Water Fund" in collaboration with the Japan Water Forum, a Japanese non-profit organization that plays a critical role in the global water sector and is involved in resolving water and sanitation problems in developing countries.

How the Fund Works:
Mr. Darvish contributes to the Fund by donating JPY100,000 JPY at every one of his winning games during the regular season. Individuals are also welcome to make donation.

The Fund will award grants to grass-roots organizations in developing countries to implement water projects such as construction of wells, installation and repairing of hand water pumps, installation of water harvesting tanks, and other eligible grass-roots activities that provide safe drinking water.

In 2010, Mr. Darvish was honored for his social works in Japan and especially for his outstanding contribution to water issues in developing countries through "Darvish Yu Water Fund" » Report on the Golden Spirit Awards Ceremony
