The overall theme of the 9th World Water Forum is “Water Security for Peace and Development”. In order to achieve this, the 4 priorities for the discussion are set in terms of “water security”, “rural development”, “cooperation”, and “means and tools”.

Seeking to identify, promote and implement concrete actions for water and sanitation, the outcomes of the 9th World Water Forum, including the preparation will be summarized as the “Dakar Initiative 2021”.

I highlighted the commonalities of water challenges in Asia and Pacific as well as Africa during the preparatory meeting. I then emphasized the necessity to convey the voices of vulnerable people from each region for each leader of national government and international organizations, in order promote the concrete actions at the field level. I then shared that the Asia-Pacific Water Forum (APWF) will organize the 4th Asia-Pacific Water Summit on 19-20th October 2020, and will deliver the outcomes of our discussion on “water for sustainable development: practices and connection to the next generation” among the government leaders of the Asia and Pacific in the 9th World Water Forum.

The majority of participants at the Kick-off meeting were from Senegal and West African countries. They actively exchanged opinions to promote cooperation and address water and institutional/political challenges in terms of water, such as the prevention of potential conflicts in the case of transboundary river basins and of managing the complex cooperation between different types of water users.
