・Foreword New Year’s Address
By Kotaro Takemura, Chair of Japan Water Forum

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

At the beginning of the New Year, I wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous year.

Thanks to your strong support, the Japan Water Forum has entered its 14th year.

2016 saw a whirlwind of international events, such as the Brexit referendum, the war in the Middle East, including Syria, the election of Donald Trump in the US, and Russian president Putin’s visit to Japan.
In the midst of drastic social and political changes, water-related issues such as climate change, limited water resources and worsening water environment have become more serious.

Japan consumes natural resources and energy from abroad and exports manufactured products. In other words, Japan’s existence is dependent on other countries amidst the current global turbulence. Therefore, Japan is obliged to contribute to the creation of a sustainable society for those suffering from water shortages, water quality degradation, and water disasters, through technology transfer, information sharing and institutional support.

This contribution is not unilateral aid, but should be sustainable and contribute to the development of both countries through business-based support, even if small in scale. We realize that the roles of the JWF have become diverse and wider in scope. We have renewed our resolution and will work together to open a new horizon, guided by your wisdom and advice.

We look forward to your continued support and cooperation.
